Showcase entry!
Xodiak (Oct 19, 2004)
You have to be an artist and a madman, a creature of infinite melancholy, with a bubble of hot poison in your loins and a super-voluptuous flame permanently aglow in your subtle spine (oh, how you have to cringe and hide!), in order to discern at once, by ineffable signs—the slightly feline outline of a cheekbone, the slenderness of a downy limb, and other indices which despair and shame and tears of tenderness forbid me to tabulate—the little deadly demon among the wholesome children; she stands unrecognized by them and unconscious herself of her fantastic power.

monk (Oct 19, 2004)
One of the best I've seen on this site in a while. I wouldn't be suprised to see this on the showcase board. ABSOLUTELY FRICKIN AMAZING!!!!!!!!!!
davincipoppalag (Oct 19, 2004)
I would love to see you do more of these. This looks like Alfred Hitchcock to me. XOD amazes...
Gigge (Oct 19, 2004)
Doesn't it say it's Vladimir Nabokov, author of Lolita? This exquisite, Xod. (psst, advanced is that way --->) :D
davincipoppalag (Oct 19, 2004)
I just obsverved that it looked like AH.. I couldn't read the name. I didn't know that was who wrote Lolita, but I recognized the passage.
Gigge (Oct 19, 2004)
That's the Sting reference to that famous book by Nabokov too in Don't Stand So Close to Me. Xod's work is so educational, lol.
Anna (edited Oct 19, 2004)
Xod.... you rock! You never cease to amaze me! This is just fabulous. :)

davincipoppalag (Oct 20, 2004)
XOD treats us to one of his realism pictures from time to time to keep us humble...
DMV (Oct 20, 2004)
This is AWESOME! too bad it is not a self portrait:(
Maybe one day huh?
marcello (Oct 20, 2004)
He's done one a bit back... not on 2draw though.
Goatlord (Oct 20, 2004)
I can only wonder why such a masterpiece is on the intermediate board. The wrinkles in the skin are are simply amazing; it looks so life-like, so photo-realistic, yet it also manages to look painted.
kejoco (Oct 20, 2004)
this was done in one sitting??
I don't think i've done ANYTHING for 8 hours straight
except maybe breathe, and i take a break even from that every couple of hours
well done oh great and masterful XOD
marcello (Oct 20, 2004)
he might have gotten up to eat a sandwich, you never know
Kloxboy (Oct 20, 2004)
This is totally cool, great portrait. Xod certainly does rock. Old people are fun to draw.
DeadlyBlondeArcher (Oct 20, 2004)
THIS is the real reason I stick around here.... every once in a while, there is an absolutely *everybody hit the floor* piece of art done that make all those days in between worthwhile. Thanks, Xod. Your talent goes beyond words.
staci (edited Oct 20, 2004)
how supurb...all the right tones in the right places..no messy spots >.< its just excellence. do one in color now!
i love how his hand is so chubby :D
Xodiak (Oct 20, 2004)
Let me tell you a funny but serious mistake I did with this drawing:
The reference picture is http://www.red-literaria.com/Autor_VladimirNabokov.JPG
If you notice I have made a mistake with the proportions of the face.
But if you open a window my with my drawing on the left half of the screen
and then open a window of the photo on the right half of the screen, side by side
and then adjust your seat slightly to the left of the screen and look at it,
you can see that my drawing and the photo look more like the same.

me007 (Oct 21, 2004)
this is awsome!!!! your realism is so stunning and so nearly perfect it is remarkable, these kind of pieces are so inspiring you are the best!!
two-na (Oct 22, 2004)
I salute ya, man. are you also this good with real paint? I also wonder if you will answer
Xodiak (Oct 22, 2004)
I will answer to you Mr. Danno... unfortunately I am not good with real paint. Some obvious disandvantages I would probably encounter when drawing with paint would be the messiness of real life material, not having an "undo" button, not being able to just "cut and move" parts around when the proportions or placement of parts would be off or wrong. I suppose I would have plenty other advantages, like not staring at a computer screen for hours, having a large canvas, not working with pixels but with real colours (real life is certainly of higher resolution, higher colour quality and higher detail) and of course having a real 3 dimensional object which you can study in depth while drawing, instead of a flat, low quality and low resolution scanned jpg photo.
However, my greatest disadvantage would be that I have never practiced. >;)

DeadlyBlondeArcher (Jun 3, 2005)
Sometimes when I log on here I just randomly click on something from the Showcase to perhaps view something I'd missed, sometimes to reacquaint myself with a painting I previously admired, and sometimes just to see what comments were added in the days after the Showcase placement. Today I ended up on this one and I noticed that you say, Xod, that you have never painted in real medium and that you are afraid there are too many disadvantages. If you are talented artistically, you will carry that talent with you regardless of the tool you choose to express yourself. Of course there's a learning curve with a new tool, but your talent will emerge eventually with any of them.

It is true that there are many amazing useful "magic" tools in a computer applet... but most of the applets are just trying to re-create what you would experience if you were using real mediums. Putting something in the wrong place and having to move it, for example... you wouldn't do that so easily on canvas... you would learn to be more careful, and then afterwards follow the rule I heard many times... never change your composition once you are past the sketch and into the painting. If you decided to break that rule, (which I have many times) you just paint over it. Layers: oil painting is done by the same method, actually.. it stays pliable and blendable for hours and sometimes even a couple of days. When you are ready for the "next layer" you let it rest until the paint is dry, and paint the next layer over it. I could go on and on, but this comment is already too lengthy. I just find it extremely sad when I see that anyone (especially someone with the magnitude of talent you harbor) starts and ends with computer art. You possess this talent that will surface regardless of the medium you choose, and there really is no feeling in art like holding a brush in your hand and making a real canvas come to life. Try it, please? :)
Drummer6 (Sep 2, 2005)
That's anawesome one! Why is it rated extreme?
catfreeek (Dec 10, 2006)

foxman8245 (Nov 27, 2007)
he looks like my 7th grade Science teacher.. "Sparky" .. at least that's what we called him
Miss_DJ (Jun 7, 2009)
it's been 2 years since someone has commented on this? It's drawn on a canvas we couldn't possibly have now, with tools that are no longer available. or so it seems.....
..it's that amazing and that well done. I'm in awe as I stare at it, trying to remember it's a drawing......
davincipoppalag (Apr 22, 2021)
and its still amazing all these years later
